We had a great response to the 12 hour Marathon Reading of George Bowering’s award winning novel Burning Water on the 30 July in downtown Vancouver. By the end of the event over 50 people read from the novel. The ages of the participants was between 5 and 78 years of age. In addition to this we estimate that several hundred people stopped to hear us read, from a few minutes, to over an hour. The author attended later that day and read an excerpt. The public was delighted to hear him read. We plan on developing the concept into a series of Marathon Readings. A big thank you to our volunteers Cara Bock and Taylore Anderson who stuck it out for 12 hours. We would also like to thank the City of Vancouver, the Century Group (Tsawwassen), New Star Books and of course George and Jean for being so gracious in attending.
